Meet the Owner
Andrew Naylor
I started in the rail industry when I was just 18, and consider myself lucky to have found something I love to do, right out of highschool and make it into a lifelong career. From entry level, I worked my way up through the ranks, learning every step of the way.
I’m beyond grateful I’ve had the opportunity to make a difference in an industry that is resurgent and continue to do so with Naylor Services.
It’s Meaningful Work
I’ve never been afraid to get my hands dirty, so I’ve done just about every job there is to do on the railway. And I’ve discovered how much passion I have to construct and repair track back to the standard of safety. You get the immediate feedback of surveying your job, seeing it completed by your own hands, and knowing it’s safe and ready for its next train. You’re always thinking a few steps ahead, but also making sure that what you leave behind is good, clean, and sound. Some past projects I’ve enjoyed the most are:
- LRT: Between Ottawa and Kitchener, or Edmonton and Calgary,
- Class 1 lines: in Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, NFLD, and others,
The Family Network
Lots of people would agree that the railway business is a lot like a family network – spending most of your days and night shoulder to shoulder with the same colleagues locally to some of the most remote areas in the Country. Because of this job, I’ve been able to experience more of my country than I ever would have.
I’m loyal to the companies I’ve worked for, because it’s not just a job, it’s something you take pride in every day. You develop history with your team, your leaders, your work and clients – and for me, both PNR and A&B Rail are still family to me. They helped me grow and learn and succeed, and I did the same in return.
Integrity On and Off the Railroad
When Cuna Rail changed owners, I took the opportunity as General Manager to help lead the company and team. I shared my experience, mentored, taught and motivated the next generation of railroaders.
That’s what it’s all about. The people I have respected the most as leaders have been in my boots. Been there, done that, am still doing it, and will continue to do so.
Leaders have to know what they are doing in order to, above all, keep people safe. Know the job – ALL the jobs – lead by example, and roll up your sleeves to get right in there and be part of the team. When I walk out there, I’ve earned their respect, just like they’ve earned mine.
From my Family to Yours
I believe a leader should be well-rounded, and my other passion is my family. Luckily for me, my wife and sons love the rail too, and I love to involve them! We share a family work-ethic and a lot of the time when I’m on a job, they come along.
It makes me proud to have them see me in my element, and I’m honoured they take an interest in what I do. My sons are right in there – I mean, what kids don’t love trains? Growing up, my dad bought me train sets. I’m giving them a really big one!
